"Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser confirmed on Saturday night that the suspect in custody related to the White House Correspondents' Dinner acted alone, as the investigation is still ongoing. "We have no reason to believe at this time that anyone else was involved," she said during a press conference along with other officials. Director of the Secret Service, Sean Curran, said the suspect charged at a checkpoint before being apprehended, crediting the 'multi-layered' protection approach. While giving updates on the injured security personnel, currently being 'evaluated' at a nearby hospital, he said, "Very fortunate that this officer is alive, is being observed, and I'm grateful that the president reached out to this officer and spoke with him earlier." US Attorney Jeanine Pirro, who was also in attendance at the event, said that the defendant is being charged under two counts. "§ 924(c) using a firearm during a crime of violence and a second crime under § 111, which is assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon <...> But make no mistake, there will be many more charges based upon the information that we are learning in this very fluid situation," the attorney added. This follows after shots were reportedly fired near the main magnetometer screening area at the Washington Hilton Hotel, prompting Secret Service agents to evacuate guests from the conference room. US President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania, Vice President JD Vance, and other Cabinet members were confirmed to be safe. One Secret Service officer was shot but saved by his bulletproof vest. The suspect, identified by local media as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, was apprehended and then taken to the hospital for evaluation while investigators examine his motives. Officials said preliminary investigations indicate he may have acted alone. Trump, who suggested he was likely the target, praised the Secret Service's response at a subsequent White House press conference. "When you're impactful, they go after you," he said, slamming the assailant as a 'very sick person'. He also said that the Correspondents' Dinner would be rescheduled within 30 days."
