"US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro said she was escorted out of the main ballroom after the shooting in Washington, DC, on Saturday at the White House Correspondents' Dinner (WHDC). "I’m at the Washington Hilton. I’ve been taken out of the main ballroom after the sound of shots fired. The Secret Service is now in charge of the building," she said. She added that the Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser and Interim Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll were on their way to the scene. Shots were reportedly fired near the main magnetometer screening area at the Washington Hilton Hotel, prompting Secret Service agents to evacuate guests from the conference room. Trump, First Lady Melania, Vice President JD Vance, and all Cabinet members were confirmed to be safe. One Secret Service officer was shot but saved by his bulletproof vest. The suspect, identified by local media as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, was apprehended and then taken to the hospital for evaluation while investigators examine his motives. Officials said preliminary investigations indicate he may have acted alone. The US president, who suggested he was likely the target, praised the Secret Service's response at a subsequent White House press conference. "When you're impactful, they go after you," he said, slamming the assailant as a 'very sick person'. The president stated the Correspondents' Dinner would be rescheduled within 30 days."
