'No room for violence!' - Netanyahu condemns reported attack on Trump at WHCD, vows Israel will act 'freely' to secure northern front

"Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday condemned the attack at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, describing it as a 'repeated attempt to murder' US President Donald Trump and First Lady, Melania Trump. "My wife and I were also shocked to hear about the repeated attempt to murder President Trump and his wife. We were happy that both of them, along with senior American administration officials, escaped unharmed," he said. "There is no room for violence, neither against political leaders nor against anyone else," he added. He linked the attack to broader concerns about incitement and political extremism, urging stronger action in education and law enforcement to prevent such acts. Shots were reportedly fired near a screening area at the Washington Hilton Hotel, prompting security forces to evacuate attendees. Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other officials were confirmed safe, while one Secret Service officer was struck but protected by a bulletproof vest. Authorities said the suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, was taken into custody, with DC mayor Muriel Bowser confirming preliminary findings that he may have acted alone. Prosecutors, including Jeanine Pirro, said the individual faces multiple charges as investigations continue. In the same remarks, Netanyahu shifted focus to Israel's northern front, saying the Israel Defence Forces would continue operating 'with a strong hand' against threats from Hezbollah. "We act vigorously according to the rules we agreed upon with the United States. And also, by the way, with Lebanon. And this means freedom of action, not just responding to attacks, that's clear. But rather to thwart immediate threats and also thwart emerging threats," he stressed. Netanyahu reiterated that Israel's priority remains 'the security of our soldiers' and civilians, signalling that military actions will continue as long as threats persist. Cross-border fire has continued between Israeli forces and Hezbollah despite repeated calls for de-escalation. Lebanese officials have accused Israel of ongoing violations of sovereignty, including repeated air strikes and incursions into Lebanese territory, warning that such actions undermine international mediation efforts."
