'We lost the ability to be present in the moment' - Rio residents launch digital detox campaign to combat excessive screen use

"Dozens of people gathered on Sunday in the gardens of the historic Catete Palace, in Rio de Janeiro, to participate in a digital detox day, setting aside their handheld devices to reconnect with a sense of their inner peace. Footage shows participants carrying out activities such as arts and crafts, reading, drawing, calligraphy, and meditation. Organised by the Yoga na Mare institute and the Offline Revolution movement, the initiative aims to promote a "shared presence experience in silence" in a time marked by "overstimulation, screens and constant acceleration," according to the official statement. Joe Felix, creator of the Offline Revolution movement, described it as 'a revolution in itself' for people to momentarily step away from technology and 'reconnect with their own essence'. "Our goal is not for people to give up their cellphones, stop using the internet or disconnect completely, but to do it in a more conscious way, and also to have moments to be with themselves, right? To be able to reconnect with their own essence and not be in front of screens all the time," he explained. Yoga instructor Ana Olivia Cardoso invited people to replace cellphone use with habits such as reading and manual activities. She added that the constant use of cellphones and technology "is generating a lot of anxiety and mental health problems," particularly in relation to dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure. "There is always something distracting us, right? And that is generating dopamine, which produces immediate pleasure, but also makes us always seek that immediate pleasure, and that disconnects us from essential things like being with ourselves, breathing," she detailed. Sunday’s gathering was inspired by similar initiatives held in cities around the world, known by different names, such as 'literary rave' and 'silent book club'."
