Chinese syndicate in Negros earns P2-billion in illegal cigarette sales

BACOLOD CITY—A Chinese syndicate operating in Negros Occidental has earned P2 billion in eight months, with the government unable to levy any tax on its illegal cigarettes manufacturing, which was busted on April 22. Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla told reporters here last week that the syndicate’s illegal cigarette factory in Barangay Calumangan, Bago City, Negros Occidental, produced P250 million worth of cigarettes a month, and operated for some eight months. They produce one pack of cigarettes at P20 and sell it for P150 tax-free, he said.
