MANILA, Philippines — Pasay City Mayor Emi Calixto-Rubiano urged residents to wear face masks outdoors after smoke from the Navotas landfill fire affected air quality in the city, raising health concerns for children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with heart or lung conditions. Calixto-Rubiano on Monday warned that the smoke may carry harmful chemicals and particulates that could affect public health. Residents were urged to stay indoors as much as possible, keep doors and windows closed, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities while the poor air quality persists. The city government also urged residents to drink plenty of water and seek medical attention if they experience severe breathing difficulties. The Pasay City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said it was monitoring the situation and coordinating with concerned agencies.
