42 kilometres of history - London Marathon 2026 breaks records as tens of thousands take to streets

"Tens of thousands of runners tackled 42 kilometres through the streets of London on Sunday as the 2026 London Marathon drew record crowds and historic performances. Footage shows crowds enthusiastically cheering on sportsmen, holding placards reading, 'Let's go Issie', 'Pain is temporary, Strava is 4eva’ and 'Power up to touch' as runners pass by them. "It was so emotional. I lay on the ground. It felt like I was going to cry," said one of the participants, Allan. Others appreciated the crowd for lifting their spirits. "The crowd was so nice, and I didn't have any time to motivate myself because the crowd motivated me all the time," another athlete, Lea, said. Mohammed Abdi added, "I've never done a marathon before, but if I do another marathon, if the crowd's like that, then you have a good chance of doing well." Participant Rice shared that he would donate the proceeds of the marathon to charity. "I kept thinking about the charity that we're doing it for, and my son's got epilepsy, so keep thinking about him." Kenyan athlete Sabastian Sawe made sporting history at the London Marathon on Sunday as he broke the two-hour barrier in the men's race, finishing in 1:59:30. Tigst Assefa successfully defended her title and set a new women-only world record of 2:15:41, bettering her 2025 London Marathon mark. The London Marathon is one of the World Marathon Majors — a series of the seven largest and most renowned marathons in the world."
