"Mali's government spokesperson, Brigadier General Issa Ousmane Coulibaly, said in Bamako on Sunday that the country would observe two days of national mourning after Defence Minister Sadio Camara was killed Saturday in an attack on his residence. "From Monday, April 27 at midnight, is declared throughout the entire national territory in tribute to General Sadio Camara [...] flags shall be flown at half-mast on all public buildings and edifices throughout the duration of the mourning period," announced Coulibaly. "Following the cowardly terrorist incidents that took place on the morning of April 25, 2026, a booby-trapped vehicle driven by a suicide bomber targeted the residence of the Minister [...] He was wounded and then transported to the hospital, where he unfortunately succumbed," he added. The attack also caused Camara's residence in Kati to collapse, killing several others and destroying a nearby mosque, where multiple people were also reported dead, Coulibaly said. Camara will receive a state funeral, by decision of Mali's transitional leader Assimi Goita. It comes as the country's army reported that attacks by 'unidentified armed terrorist groups' were carried out at several locations and the capital city of Bamako on Saturday, and across Mali. According to reports, the al-Qaeda-linked group Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin claimed responsibility for the attacks, including strikes on Bamako's international airport and other locations, reportedly carried out alongside the Azawad Liberation Front. The government condemned the attacks and vowed to pursue those responsible, urging citizens to remain vigilant and rely on official sources for information. Authorities have not released a death toll in one of the largest coordinated attacks in Mali in recent years. Mali has faced years of instability driven by jihadist insurgencies and separatist movements, with violence regularly targeting both military positions and civilian areas despite ongoing security operations."
