Balikatan 2026 - US, Filipino troops hold counter-landing drills in Palawan

"The Armed Forces of the Philippines and the US conducted a counter-landing live fire exercise in Palawan on Monday. Footage shows troops using various weapons systems to strike targets at sea and in the air, including unmanned boats and drones to fight back a simulated assault on the island. "We used unmanned systems very heavily. Unlike in the previous Balikatan exercises, this time we had drones, both aerial and surface," General Romeo Brawner, Commanding General of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, said. "We also conducted counter-drone operations because, as we see from conflicts around the world, the character of war is changing, with increasing involvement of unmanned systems in modern warfare," he continued. Brawner noted that the objectives were achieved, with accurate strikes against both surface and unmanned surface vessels using their latest systems. The general also highlighted the strategic importance of Palawan, where the drills were conducted. The island faces the West Philippine Sea and lies close to the Kalayaan Island Group, within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone. "We are very fortunate to have partners from like-minded nations who have invested not just in the defence of the Philippines but in ensuring that we can all work together to defend the Indo-Pacific region," he added. The 41st Balikatan exercise featured more than 500 troops from the Philippines, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand."
