LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly on Monday passed the Punjab Child Marriage Restraint Act 2026 by a majority vote, marking a significant legislative step toward protecting children from early marriages. The session, presided over by Speaker Malik Muham-mad Ahmad Khan, also saw Punjab’s Minerals Minister Sher Ali Gorchani alleged widespread corruption in pink salt land allocations during the PTI government’s tenure. He claimed thousands of acres were distributed among close associates through rule amendments, while the current government has generated over four billion rupees in revenue from the same resource. Opposition member Rana Shahbaz raised concerns over the wheat crisis, noting that prices had climbed to 3,700 rupees while the government had made no purchases and banks remained reluctant to extend loans to farmers. The session also featured a resolution honoring the first anniversary of Operation Bunyan-ul-Marsoos, commending the Pakistan Armed Forces and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government for their counterterrorism efforts. The resolution saluted Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and praised Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for her role in restoring peace across Punjab. Copyright Business Recorder, 2026
