Govt allows mango exports

ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to allow export of mangoes for the 2026 crop year from June 1, 2026, following requests from stakeholders, according to an official communication issued by the Ministry of Commerce. The decision was taken by a committee constituted under the Export Policy Order 2022, which reviewed the concerns of exporters and other stakeholders before approving the revised export schedule. According to the notification, export of mangoes for the current crop year will commence from June 1, 2026, while all other terms and conditions will remain unchanged under the Export Policy Order 2022. Sources said that the decision effectively extends the export commencement date compared to last year’s framework, when the government, through a Statutory Regulatory Order (SRO), had allowed export of mangoes from May 20, 2025, subject to quality and phyto-sanitary compliance requirements. The earlier start date had drawn concerns from stakeholders over premature harvesting and its impact on fruit quality and export reputation. Industry representatives had urged the government to revise the export window this year to ensure better maturity of the fruit, improved shelf life, and enhanced competitiveness in international markets. Officials believe that aligning exports with the peak harvesting period will not only ensure higher quality shipments but also help exporters fetch better prices in key markets, particularly in the Middle East, Europe, and Far East. Pakistan is among the leading mango exporting countries, and the timing of exports plays a critical role in maintaining its share in the global market. The latest decision is expected to strike a balance between market access and quality assurance, addressing long-standing concerns of exporters. Copyright Business Recorder, 2026
