'They favour the far right' - Presidential candidate Cepeda links bomb attacks in southwestern Colombia to FARC's political interests

"Colombian presidential candidate Ivan Cepeda on Monday described as 'terrorist acts' the recent attacks that since the weekend have affected the southwestern departments of Cauca and Valle del Cauca, attributed to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). During an event organised by the Alianza por la Vida coalition in Bogota, in which he is seeking to reach the presidential office, Cepeda stated that the attacks were aimed at favouring the far-right. "It is evident that the authors of these terrorist acts seek to favour, let us say it clearly, the political project of the far right, without a doubt," said the candidate. He also warned that this type of action not only generates violence but also seeks to manipulate the perception of security and governability in the affected regions, creating an environment favourable for politically driven decisions. "What this is about here is provoking maximum fear and destabilisation and generating the sensation that it is required to return to the formulas so many times failed, of militarising the territories to the extreme," Cepeda said. In recent days, Colombia has seen a wave of violent attacks, mainly in the southwestern part of the country, including departments such as Cauca and Valle de Cauca. These areas have historically been home to dissident factions of illegal armed groups. The attacks have involved car bombs and other devices detonating on main roads, impacting both security forces and civilians. Colombian authorities have responded with military reinforcements, judicial investigations and security operations."
