ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) on Tuesday demanded the government immediately withdraw all perks, high salaries, and free fuel facilities granted to ministers and government officials. In a statement, the council’s vice-Chairman Pir Muhammad Masood Chishti, its Chairman Executive Committee Munir Ahmed Malik and the PBC members, took strong exception to the record hike in fuel price, which lead to overall massive inflation in the country especially sharp increase in prices of consumer items and living of a common man has become much more expensive. They said that high fuel prices are already adversely hitting the affordability of middle and the lower middle class of Pakistan. They said that the government has increased the fuel prices to honour commitments with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) without considering and realizing the fact that almost half of the population live below the poverty line, and it would affect their life badly. They also said that the continuous soaring fuel price has caused great unrest and frustration among the people. It has further shaken the faith and trust of the people in the government since their life has become very hard and difficult, they added. The high fuel price has increased rates of daily items/commodities and seriously affected everyone, they said, adding the government has failed to understand the miseries of peoples which they are facing due to continuous massive inflation, particularly rapid and high increase in fuel prices. They said that the government collects massive amounts of direct and indirect taxes to provide relief to the people of Pakistan, the lack of transparency regarding the utilization of these funds remains a major concern. The Council demanded that the government should immediately withdraw all the privileges, high packages and free fuel facility being provided to the ministers and government officials & other undue expenses should also be condensed/reduced, instead to further over burden and squeeze the common man. “The elite class should also sacrifice and the government should take immediate concrete practical steps to control this inflationary pressure and provide relief to a common man,” the statement added.
