LCCI warns against proposed new levies on businesses

LAHORE: The Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI) on Tuesday cautioned against proposed new levies on businesses as LCCI President Faheem Ur Rehman Saigol used a high-level meeting with Punjab Assembly chief whip Rana Muhammad Arshad to press the government on a range of pressing economic concerns. Rana Muhammad Arshad, who also serves as Vice President of PML-N Punjab, visited the Chamber alongside Senior Vice President Tanveer Ahmed Sheikh and Vice President Khurram Lodhi. During the meeting, he highlighted Punjab’s significant contribution to the national gross domestic product (GDP) and outlined recent government initiatives, including the province-wide “Suthra Punjab” cleanliness drive and a crackdown on illegal land occupation. He reaffirmed that maintaining law and order remains central to the Punjab chief minister’s vision for attracting investment. During the discussion, the LCCI president voiced strong opposition to a proposed infrastructure development cess, warning that traders, exporters and importers are already burdened by high energy costs and heavy taxation. He also called for extended market operating hours, arguing that current restrictions are negatively affecting business revenues. Copyright Business Recorder, 2026
