Water cannons in use - Clashes erupt as hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jews block Jerusalem's roads in protest against conscription

"On Wednesday, clashes erupted in Jerusalem as Israeli police attempted to disperse a protest against the conscription of Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) Jews into the military. Officers used water cannons to break up the demonstration, which had gathered in the city centre. Footage from the scene shows police officers pushing back crowds of demonstrators who gathered in several locations in Jerusalem, chanting and singing, and staging sit-ins on busy roads to protest the policy. Demonstrators oppose efforts to extend military conscription to members of the Haredi community, which has been a long-standing source of political and social tension in Israel. The Haredi community, an ultra-Orthodox Jewish population, has historically been exempt from mandatory military service under agreements dating back to the early days of the State of Israel. However, recent political and legal discussions have increased pressure on the Haredi population to integrate into the Israel Defence Forces, leading to recurring protests and political debates."
