MANILA, Philippines — The commemoration of Labor Day in the Philippines began on May 1, 1903, when more than 100,000 workers marched from Tondo to Malacañang to demand fair wages and better working conditions from the Americans. Led by the Union Obrera Democratica de Filipinas, the protest condemned the exploitation of Filipino workers and called for Philippine independence from the United States, which took over the country from Spain in 1898.
