Chairperson Faryal Talpur presided over an important meeting of the Standing Committee on Home Affairs at the Sindh Assembly on Thursday to review the anti-narcotics efforts, security landscape and law enforcement strategies in the province. The committee engaged in extensive deliberations regarding the ongoing “Kacha” operations against dacoits, the rising incidents of street crimes, and the provincial crackdown on narcotics. Additionally, members reviewed the role of the Sindh Forensic Science Laboratory as well. Addressing the meeting, Chairperson Faryal stated that drugs are destroying the younger generation, and every segment of society must play its role in combating this menace. She directed the police to take effective measures to eliminate drugs and to carry out an indiscriminate and vigorous crackdown against drug mafias. She emphasised ensuring strict and organised checking in border areas, adding that random checking should be aimed at preventing the transportation of narcotics. “The crackdown should be conducted in a manner that makes the police a symbol of fear for drug dealers,” she added. Faryal appreciated the performance of Sindh Police in the Kacha operation, stating that the courage and bravery of the officers are commendable. She added that establishing law and order in riverine (Kacha) areas, providing a peaceful environment to the public, and restoring basic facilities are among the top priorities of the current government, and all possible measures will be taken in this regard. Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar, while briefing the meeting, said that work is underway to establish a special court for speedy trial of drug-related cases, aimed at ensuring exemplary punishment for the accused at the earliest. He informed that a province-wide crackdown against narcotics is ongoing, while joint camps comprising ANF, Customs, Excise, and Police are active in border areas. He further stated that the Kacha operation was initiated on the directives of President Asif Ali Zardari, and has yielded positive results. Strict action is ongoing against dacoits and their facilitators, and they have been almost eliminated. Development projects under the Annual Development Programme (ADP) will be launched to improve infrastructure in Kacha areas. The Sindh home minister also announced civil awards for outstanding performance for DIG Larkana Nasir Aftab, SSP Samiiullah Soomro, SSP Kashmore Murad Ghanghro, SSP Shahzeb Chachar, and SSP Ghotki Anwar Khetran. IGP Sindh Javed Alam Odho, while giving a detailed briefing, informed that 133 suspects have been arrested in major drug cases, while 145 FIRs have been registered. Out of these, 107 accused are currently in jail. He added that the drug mafia networks are being dismantled through systematic crackdowns, and strict action is ongoing against them. He further stated that, as a result of successful operations in Kacha areas, there are currently no cases of kidnapping for ransom, roads are open, and the law and order situation has significantly improved, which will be maintained. Members of the committee appreciated the performance of Sindh Police in the Kacha operation, while also acknowledging the services of Special Secretary Home Saeed Ahmed Shaikh.
