"The state funeral to honour slain Malian defence minister General Sadio Camara was held in Bamako on Thursday after he was killed last Saturday in an attack on his residence. Footage shows junta leader, General Assimi Goita, and other Malian officials attending the ceremony. Some soldiers are seen carrying a flag-draped casket containing the minister's remains, as others march and play instruments at the Military Engineering Parade Ground. "We lost him as a hero, as a great architect who revolutionised the Malian army toward sovereignty," said a member of the National Youth Council of Mali, Drissa Kamissoko. He added, "He did not live in vain. Sadio Camara is the embodiment of Mali, a worthy son of Mali who will remain engraved in our memory." Another local, honouring the minister's memory, noted that Camara always led by example. "Guards die, but guards never surrender. And even more so, a general never surrenders," Abdoulaye Niang underlined. 47-year-old Camara was killed in a suicide car bomb near his residence, along with several members of his family, in the garrison town of Kati on April 25. The country's authorities condemned the act as 'cowardly terrorist attacks' and promised to bring those responsible to justice, urging citizens to remain vigilant and rely on official sources of information. According to media reports, the al-Qaeda-linked group Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin claimed responsibility for the attacks, alongside the separatist Azawad Liberation Front (FLA). Mali has faced years of instability driven by jihadist insurgencies and separatist movements, with violence regularly targeting both military positions and civilian areas despite ongoing security operations."
