Trump-style tariff war - Colombian expert says Ecuador's Noboa 'imitating' US president to address security crisis

"Manuel Camilo, professor of International Relations at the University of San Buenaventura, said the tariff war between Colombia and Ecuador had shades of Donald Trump, speaking from Bogota. "Very important is that President [Daniel] Noboa is imitating the responses that President [Donald] Trump makes to international crises, using economic measures to address non-economic issues," he claimed. Ecuador has accused Colombia of failing to control drug trafficking. "It makes sense in the fact that indeed the companies surrounding President Noboa, in some way seek certain protection. And the easiest way to seek protection against competition has always been tariffs and in this, it is very, let's say, modelled on the Trump model," he went on. "You have the overflow of violence from Colombia and above all, you have the spillover in terms of technology, of 'know-how' if you will, from the Mexican cartels, he added. The trade war between the two countries intensified when Ecuador imposed 100 percent tariffs on Colombian products under the so-called "security rate." In response, Petro's government responded with a decree that includes tariffs of up to 75 percent on more than 180 Ecuadorian subcategories."
