Jabalpur (MP) : A tourist cruise boat capsized and sank near Khamariya Island in Bargi Dam on April 30 evening after being hit by sudden strong winds, triggering a major search and rescue operation involving multiple agencies. According to initial information from district officials, the boat was carrying tourists when weather conditions reportedly deteriorated rapidly over the reservoir. Strong gusts of wind are believed to have caused the vessel to lose balance and overturn, leading to panic among passengers onboard. Soon after the incident was reported, local administration teams launched immediate rescue efforts. However, due to the depth of the reservoir and underwater challenges, authorities requested specialized support from the Indian Army. Responding to the request, Army diving teams were airlifted overnight from Agra and deployed at the site. The divers joined ongoing operations early the next day and began systematic underwater search work in coordination with local rescue units. So far, Army divers have recovered five bodies from the submerged area. Officials have not yet confirmed the total number of passengers who were onboard at the time of the accident, while efforts continue to trace those still missing. Search and recovery operations are being carried out under difficult conditions, with underwater visibility reported to be poor and strong currents complicating diving efforts. Disaster response teams, police personnel, and local administration officials are jointly monitoring the operation. Authorities have initiated an investigation into the cause of the incident. Preliminary assessment suggests that sudden weather changes and strong winds may have played a key role in the capsizing of the vessel. Rescue operations are continuing, and officials have stated that all possible resources are being utilized to ensure that missing passengers are located at the earliest.
