"Police clashed with demonstrators in Istanbul on Friday as crowds took to the streets to mark International Workers' Day. Footage shows police chasing and detaining protesters, with some being taken onto buses, while others gathered nearby, chanting slogans and holding placards. According to local media, the demonstration was organised by trade unions, political groups and civil organisations on Buyukdere Street in the Mecidiyekoy district. Protesters attempted to march towards Taksim Square, but were stopped by police barricades. Reports said police used tear gas and canisters to disperse the crowd, with clashes continuing into surrounding streets. Taksim Square holds symbolic significance for labour movements in Turkey, particularly following the events of May 1, 1977, when gunfire during a large demonstration led to multiple deaths. Authorities have banned protests in the square since the Gezi Park protests in 2013, which saw widespread unrest and clashes between demonstrators and security forces. May Day rallies are held annually around the world, with trade unions and workers calling for improved rights and social protections. Similar tensions were reported during last year’s demonstrations in Istanbul, when protesters again attempted to reach Taksim Square."
