'It's never been sought before, why should we be different?' - Trump on 'War Powers Resolution' May 1 deadline to seek congressional approval

"Donald Trump claimed he didn't need to seek congressional approval to extend the Iran war - as he spoke with reporters on the White House lawn on Friday. "It's never been sought before. There's been numerous, many, many times, and nobody's ever gotten it before. They consider it totally unconstitutional. But we're always in touch with Congress. But nobody's ever saw it before. Nobody's ever asked for it before. It's never been used before. Why should we be different?" he asked. Under the War Powers Resolution 1973, a president has 60 days before requiring congressional authorisation to continue hostilities. However, the current ceasefire has thrown that into doubt, with the Trump administration suggesting the clock had 'reset' - despite the May 1 deadline. It came amid reports from Iranian media that Tehran had submitted its latest response to US revisions of a potential deal, via Pakistani intermediaries. Talks had appeared to stall after the first round last month, with Trump extending the initial ceasefire after the second round failed to materialise."
