"The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, commemorated International Workers' Day this Friday by leading a massive march at the American embassy, rejecting the economic blockade by the United States on the Caribbean island. Under the slogan 'The Homeland is Defended,' the mobilization was called by the sole union Central de Trabajadores de Cuba (CTC) and also featured the presence of former president Raúl Castro, who had not attended a public event since January 2026. In the images, both leaders are seen displaying a commemorative plaque representing the number of signatures collected in favor of the Cuban revolution, amid the tightening of the U.S. trade blockade and the dependence on humanitarian aid from other countries. "A few days ago, Cubans registered our commitment to the homeland in this hour of siege, energy blockade, and the intensification of a genocidal policy," said Joel Suárez, a protester. The mobilization gathered thousands of people who marched through various avenues of Havana to the vicinity of the U.S. diplomatic headquarters. The participants expressed their rejection of the economic sanctions that, according to the Cuban government, affect the country's development. "Today (...) we gather to defend Cuba, (...) the Cuban people will not be alone. The Cuban people have all the solidarity of the peoples of the south," added Yassan Sahran, a Palestinian doctor, present at the demonstration. The Cuban government reiterated that the economic blockade remains the main obstacle to the country's development and insisted on maintaining national unity in the face of international pressures."
