Sacred observance - Thousands gather in Colombo as Buddhists mark Vesak Day

"Thousands of worshippers gathered in Colombo on Friday to celebrate Vesak Day, one of Buddhism's holiest festivals. Footage shows large crowds of devotees gathering at Kelaniya Temple, bringing flowers and other offerings to decorate the temple and statues of Buddha, while priests led prayers and participants lit oil lamps as part of the sacred observances. "It is important for us to commemorate the noble birth, enlightenment, and passing away (Parinirvana) of our teacher, the Buddha," said Gayani Watsala, one of the devotees. "We can perform material offerings and offerings of practice. We can observe precepts, give alms, and host alms-halls (dansals)," Watsala added. Vesak Day, also known as Buddha Day, marks the birth, enlightenment, and death of Gautama Buddha, making it the most significant event in the Buddhist calendar. Festivities often feature colourful displays lining streets and homes, while sky lanterns are released into the night to symbolise the letting go of negativity and welcoming renewal and peace. Across Colombo, tens of thousands converge on temples, commemorating the sacred occasion which celebrates the enlightenment and pursuit of a pure and mindful life."
