Food Dept buys 955 bags of wheat from farmers so far

LAHORE: The Punjab Food Department has purchased 42,955 bags of wheat from farmers so far, said Secretary Food Safety and Consumer Protection Dr. Kiran Khurshid. During visits to various procurement (PR) centres in Sargodha and Chiniot, the secretary said that 70,597 farmers have been registered across the province, while the registration process is continuing at 233 wheat procurement centres. She stated that 14 companies are participating in wheat procurement across Punjab. The Food Department currently has 1,849,366 metric tons of gunny bags (bardana), out of which 211,240 bags have been distributed to farmers on merit. READ MORE: Provision of Rs6bn free gunny bags: Punjab CM announces wheat procurement rate Dr. Kiran Khurshid said that the wheat procurement process is ongoing at a fast pace, adding that Rs133 million have been transferred to farmers’ accounts within 72 hours. She further said that farmers are submitting their details at nearby procurement centres to obtain bardana, with priority being given to Kisan Card holders and small farmers. Wheat procurement will continue on Sundays and public holidays to facilitate farmers. She added that payments for procured wheat are being transferred directly to farmers’ bank accounts within 72 hours. Monitoring committees at provincial and divisional levels are overseeing the procurement process, while staff of the Special Monitoring Unit (SMU), established by the Chief Minister Punjab, are present to address complaints on the spot.
