KARACHI: The modern “Awam Dost” livestock market, established at Karachi’s Northern Bypass, has become fully operational as of April 5, marking the beginning of a high-octane trading season for sacrificial animals. According to market administration, over 65,000 animals from across the country have already reached the facility, drawing a massive influx of citizens in search of their preferred livestock. Market Administrator Tariq Tanoli stated that a dedicated team of veterinary doctors has been deployed at the Marshalling Area to conduct thorough medical examinations of every animal. “Only clinically healthy animals are being granted entry into the market to ensure the safety of both buyers and livestock,” Tanoli emphasized. The market has been strategically divided into various sectors, including VVIP, Golden, Sapphire, KPK, Sindh, and Pahari blocks. Currently, the ‘General Block’ remains the primary attraction for citizens, witnessing intense bargaining between traders and buyers. Sarfraz, the contractor for water supply, confirmed that a temporary hydrant with a storage capacity of 1.0 million gallons has been established. To ensure seamless distribution, over two dozen water tankers are operating 24/7 across all blocks. Addressing power concerns, Administration In-charge Aslam Baloch noted that heavy-duty generators have been installed to prevent any power outages. Furthermore, temporary cellular towers have been erected to provide uninterrupted network signals, facilitating communication between traders, buyers, and their families. The facility also features a vibrant Food Street, managed by Rao Faisal, offering traditional delicacies such as Nihari, Karahi, Sajji, and fast food. Essential amenities, including a large number of restrooms, mobile veterinary camps in every block, and temporary mosques for prayers, were prioritized from day one. Plans to install additional ATM machines are also underway to facilitate financial transactions. Adnan, the parking contractor, highlighted that 200 acres of land have been dedicated to secure vehicle parking, with an online pass issuance system already in place for heavy vehicles and motorcycles. To ensure a safe environment, a heavy contingent of police has been deployed at all entry and exit points, as well as within the market premises. The enhanced security measures have allowed citizens to visit the Northern Bypass market around the clock without any security concerns. Copyright Business Recorder, 2026
