'Time for social transformation has arrived' - Ivan Cepeda thanks labor unions for their support of his candidacy during Labor Day march in Bogota

"Hundreds of people marched in Bogotá to commemorate International Workers' Day, accompanied by presidential candidate Iván Cepeda, who reaffirmed his fight for the working class and delivered a speech regarding his candidacy. Images recorded this Friday show the mobilization heading towards Plaza Bolívar, where the leftist candidate recalled the struggle for labor rights in the country and other parts of the world. "Today is a day consecrated worldwide to the fight for the dignity, justice, and freedom of the people. It is the day we remember the historic mobilizations of the working class and their trade union organizations," he expressed. He also expressed his support for the government of President Gustavo Petro, indicating that it represents a movement of social transformation for the Colombian people and a political project supported by decades of social mobilization. "The historical time for social transformation has arrived, whose foundation we have already laid in these four years of government. After a century of struggles, the working class with its mobilization and political action allowed the emergence of the first progressive government in 2022, presided over by comrade Gustavo Petro Urrego," he highlighted. In his speech, Cepeda also expressed gratitude to the labor unions that have supported him ahead of the presidential elections on May 31, in which he is running under the Historic Pact and Alliance for Life project. "I thank the social movement and the labor movement, in particular, for inviting me to speak at this significant event, and also last night and all the labor unions for announcing their unanimous political support for my candidacy," he stated. During the mobilization, the protesters also expressed their rejection of U.S. President Donald Trump for his interventionist policy in Latin American countries and the rest of the world. Therefore, they hung a figure of the North American president from a monument as a form of protest. According to the latest Invamer poll, Iván Cepeda is emerging as the favorite candidate with 44.3 percent of the vote intention, while right-wing candidates Abelardo de la Espriella and Paloma Valencia reach 21.5 and 19.8 percent of the votes, respectively."
