"Thousands attended a major rally in Colombo on Friday, as the National People's Power (NPP)-led government held 21 demonstrations across Sri Lanka to celebrate International Workers' Day, or May Day. Footage shows participants wearing red shirts marching along the central streets, waving flags, carrying banners and placards, and chanting as they arrive at the rally venue. Senior officials, including President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, were in attendance and addressed the party supporters. "This government [is a] hundred per cent corruption-free government, and they are smoothly conducting every sector. Not only government sectors, but even private sectors they are handling smoothly... They always fulfil the country's common people's requirements," a participant voiced his support for the NPP leadership. "This country is developing and moving forward in the right path <...> Earlier, the country and the people were obsessed with lies, loot and power struggles. But now, the system is good in this country," another participant noted. The attendee also highlighted the significance of May Day, dedicating the event to the 'sacrifice' of workers who had historically fought for better labour conditions. "You have to claim your rights. Only then will the people who rule you rule for you. If not, the people who rule you will rule for their families and for their happiness," a participant added. According to media reports, the NPP had earlier announced plans to hold 21 May Day rallies in 21 major Sri Lankan cities to mark the anniversary. International Workers' Day, widely known as May Day, is observed annually on May 1 to honour workers and the labour movement. It traces its origins to 19th-century protests in the United States - most notably the Haymarket Affair in Chicago - where workers rallied for an eight-hour workday."
