MANILA, Philippines – The Alliance of Consumers in the Electricity Sector (ACES) of Mindanao, a coalition of member-consumer-owners representing a cross-section of sectors including vendors, indigenous peoples, transportation groups, the religious sector, media, and the youth, has raised concerns over the proposal of Manila Electric Company (Meralco) to convert South Cotabato Electric Cooperative (SOCOTECO) II into a stock corporation. Under the proposal, SOCOTECO II, whose franchise area covers General Santos City and Sarangani province, would be restructured into a corporate entity, with Meralco holding 70 percent and the remaining 30 percent opened to public investors.
