"Miguel Masaisai, a 23-year-old triathlete, began a cycling journey on Friday from his hometown, Goma, as part of 'Pedalling for Peace' initiative aimed at promoting African unity. Footage shows Masaisai, dressed in full cycling gear and wearing a helmet, speaking to the media alongside his only companion, a sports bike, before setting off on his journey. He was met with strong support from followers on the streets as he began the expedition. "'Pedalling for Peace' is a cycling movement that involves riding long distances and building endurance to carry a message of peace across the world," Masaisai explained. Coming from war-torn eastern DRC, Masaisai said the challenge has strengthened his resolve to promote peace and resilience, values that define the cycling journey. "It has given me the strength to keep going and [...] to show that there is not only war in Congo, but that we are also capable of achieving great things despite the conflict," the athlete continued. The project was warmly received by local supporters and sports experts, who described Masaisai's journey as a significant step toward bringing people together and a positive example to lead young athletes. "When we engage in sports activities, bonds are created - it unites us all and raises awareness about living together peacefully, even at the continental level, thereby strengthening African unity," pointed out sports analyst Nzungu Shema. Having completed a 7,000-kilometre journey from Goma to Cape Town in 2025, Masaisai now hopes to cross 17 countries by bike before reaching Rabat. His previous expeditions have drawn international attention and stood as an inspiring testament to the resolve of young people to rise above division and oppression."
