Sacred procession - Thousands of devotees march in Bihar with Buddha statues to mark Vesak in Bihar

"Hundreds of Buddhist devotees held processions near the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, on Friday to mark the 2570th Vesak Day, commemorating the birth, enlightenment and passing of Buddha. Footage shows pilgrims and monks carrying ornaments as they walked towards the 80-foot Great Buddha Statue. Devotees were later seen entering the Mahabodhi Temple and performing rituals outside the venue. "Today is very, very important for Buddhists, because today Buddha was born, Buddha shared the knowledge of our religion, and then he passed away on the same day," said a Buddhist monk fromThailand. Another devotee said the occasion held special significance because of Bodh Gaya's central place in Buddhist tradition. "This Buddha Purnima is very important to me. It is here in Gaya, under the Bodhi Tree, that the Buddha attained jnana, or self-knowledge, and fulfilled his prarabdha, or destined karma," the devotee said. Attendees also used the occasion to call for global peace and unity amid ongoing conflicts. "We need to pray for peace all over the world. We have to pray for peace for the world on this day," the devotee added. Vesak Day, also known as the 'Thrice-Blessed Festival,' marks three major events in the life of Gautama Buddha: his birth as Prince Siddhartha in Lumbini, his enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree in Bodh Gaya, and his Mahaparinirvana in Kushinagar, where he passed away and, according to Buddhist belief, ended the cycle of rebirth."
