Sands of time - International Sand Sculpture Festival opens in St Petersburg

"The 22nd International Sand Sculpture Festival opened on Friday at the Peter and Paul Fortress in St Petersburg. Footage captures artists refining their sculptures as residents and visitors of Russia's Northern Capital marvel at myth and fairy tale-inspired creations. Aleksandr Skarednov, a sculptor from Tyumen, explained the stages of working on the figures. "First, we start with a sketch. We need to plan the design clearly, combining large and small elements. Then we mark out the shape in the sand, cut, shape the general forms, and remove excess. From these basic shapes, we add the finer details," he said. Aleksandr also mentioned that he drew inspiration from medieval legends when creating his sculpture. "I depicted two birds - the sirin and the alkonost, which are mythical Slavic creatures. They’re often shown together because of their contrasting qualities. The alkonost is a bird of joy, while the sirin is a bird of sorrow," he added. Visitor Lyudmila Denisova shared her impressions of the sculptures on display. "I admire the craftsmanship, the meticulousness, and the artistry of the creators. It’s truly impressive, which is why I keep coming back," she said. This year’s theme is 'The Joy of Creativity'. According to organisers, thousands of tonnes of sand were extracted from quarries in the Leningrad region for the event, which also features a play area for children. The exhibition is open from 1 May to 1 September. "
