'Adversity is not new' - Mexico's Sinaloa appoints interim governor as US seeks Rocha Moya's extradition on drug trafficking charges

"The State Congress of Sinaloa voted by majority on Saturday to grant Governor Ruben Rocha Moya a leave of more than 30 days, appointing Secretary General of Government Yeraldine Bonilla Valverde as interim governor in his place. The move follows accusations from the Southern District of New York's Prosecutor's Office linking Rocha Moya and nine other current and former regional officials to drug trafficking, with the US authority requesting their provisional arrest for extradition. In an extraordinary session of the state Congress, based in Culiacan, Rocha Moya's number two took the oath, calling it an 'honour' to assume the position of governor at a time when the state is 'facing a difficult situation'. "Rest assured, as always, we will move forward with great success. Strength and courage run through the veins of the people of Sinaloa. In our land, adversity is not new, and our people have always moved forward. Today will be no exception," she added. The interim governor also expressed her support for Rocha Moya, who had written to the state Congress pledging to prove his innocence before Mexico's justice institutions. "Governor, the vast majority of the people of Sinaloa know this, and we are sure it will be so. I express my deep solidarity," she stated. Rocha Moya requested leave to step down as governor on Friday, after Mexico's Attorney General's Office announced it would open an investigation into the US accusations. The now-former governor said he is 'calm' and assured that the accusations seek to 'harm the movement' he belongs to, referring to the ruling National Regeneration Movement (MORENA)."
