"US air carrier Spirit Airlines on Saturday announced it is shutting down its operations 'immediately', citing a 'sudden and sustained' rise in fuel prices due to conflict in the Middle East. Footage shows the closed Spirit Airlines headquarters in Dania Beach, Florida, and an aircraft parked at Miami International Airport, with assistance desks and customer service counters shut and signs announcing the airline's closure. "Recent material increase in oil prices and other pressures on the business have significantly impacted Spirit's financial outlook," the company said. "With no additional funding available to the company, Spirit had no choice but to begin this wind-down." The airline informed its customers that all flights had been cancelled and that it would not be able to rebook them with other carriers. According to the union, the closure would leave over 7,500 employees without jobs. The US and Israel's war on Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz have caused jet fuel prices to skyrocket, causing budget airlines to operate on razor-thin margins."
