"Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum inaugurated the Nichupte Vehicular Bridge in Cancun on Saturday, a project that spans the lagoon of the same name for a distance of 8.8 kilometres and extends to a total length of 11.2 kilometres. The infrastructure project is the second-longest of its kind in Latin America, following the Rio-Niteroi Bridge in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which measures 13.3 kilometres in length. Footage shows the bridge filled with hundreds of attendees, including runners and cyclists. The bridge reportedly has three lanes as well as a bike path and a navigation passage in both directions. During the event, Ana Paty Peralta, the president of the municipality of Benito Juarez based in the city of Cancun, stated that the bridge would facilitate travel to tourist areas and bring benefits for both locals and tourists. "This will reduce the travel time of thousands of workers. That is the goal of this bridge. Besides being spectacular, everyone who crosses this bridge every day in the morning, in the afternoon, returning from work – well, it will become part of their daily life," she indicated. "Having a project like this is undoubtedly a historic event and a dream come true for thousands of Cancún residents," she added. The bridge uses state-of-the-art machinery for the first time to protect the lagoon and prevent the removal of mangroves. This is a groundbreaking initiative in Mexico and Latin America, as it uses a 'top-down' approach, according to officials. Additionally, the project reportedly has an investment of 12 billion pesos, which is approximately 687 million USD."
