Pangasinan fish farms operators grapple with heat, fuel costs

BINMALEY, Pangasinan — Fishpond operators in Pangasinan are struggling with extreme heat and rising production costs driven by high fuel and feed prices, a fisheries group leader said. Christopher Sibayan of the Samahan ng Magbabangus sa Pangasinan said sustained temperatures above 40°C, peaking at 46°C, have triggered “gataw” in milkfish, forcing fish to surface and gasp due to low oxygen levels. He said some fishponds in Lingayen have been affected, though only about 5 percent of stocks so far.
