"Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called on Sunday for Western unity, just a day after warning of NATO's possible 'disintegration,' as rifts between the US and European powers deepen over the Middle East conflict. "The greatest threat to the transatlantic community are not its external enemies, but the ongoing disintegration of our alliance. We must all do what it takes to reverse this disastrous trend," he wrote on Saturday on his X account. Speaking in Warsaw before departing for the European Political Community summit, Tusk said the Western alliance must be protected 'at all costs', warning against efforts to question NATO's relevance or weaken the European Union. "For us, NATO, transatlantic ties, ties with the United States, a United Europe is our strategy from the beginning. Therefore, I will do everything so that today, tomorrow, and during this summit, to make everyone aware that internal conflicts within NATO are the last thing we need," he said. His remarks come amid tensions between Europe and Washington after US President Donald Trump reported that he plans to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany. A move is widely seen as a response to the stance of European allies on the Iran conflict. This drew criticism from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who reportedly said the US had 'no strategy' on Iran and was being 'humiliated' by Tehran's negotiators. The Polish prime minister also underscored the importance of solidarity between Europe and North America, calling it a cornerstone of stability. "We want a united Europe […] an integrated and jointly acting NATO […] the greatest possible solidarity between the United States, Canada, and Europe," he added. This year's summit is expected to bring together leaders from nearly 50 countries, including EU members, the United Kingdom, Ukraine and partners from across Europe and the South Caucasus, with Canada set to participate for the first time."
