'Every Soviet family paid the price for world freedom' - Immortal Regiment marches in Washington to honour WWII veterans

"The Russian community came together in Washington, DC, on Saturday for an 'Immortal Regiment' procession to honour Soviet veterans of World War II, as the event faced a three-year hiatus in the US capital. Footage shows people carrying portraits of their relatives, waving flags and singing patriotic songs as they move through the streets. Counter-protesters with Ukrainian flags are also seen confronting the march, while police monitor the scene. "Every family, almost every family in the Soviet Union paid the price for freedom for the world," said the procession participant. "We're here to honour our people, the Soviet people, both on the front and in the rear, who fought and worked and saved humanity from the horror of Nazism. And we are very deeply grateful for people of all nations who rose to fight this evil, especially those who sacrificed, gave an ultimate sacrifice," he added. The Immortal Regiment is a global event held annually in May as part of Russia's Victory Day celebrations. Participants honour their relatives who served on the frontlines by carrying their portraits. Originally launched in Russia to commemorate the sacrifices made by families during the war, the tradition has since expanded to countries worldwide."
