DOLE pushes workers’ rights, commuter safety

THE Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said its high-impact, high-visibility inspection (Hihvi) initiative has improved compliance with labor standards and enhanced safety measures for workers and the riding public. “There will be no compromise when it comes to workers’ rights and commuter safety,” Labor Undersecretary Benedicto Ernesto Bitonio Jr., officer-in-charge of the Office of the Secretary, said. The inspection of key transport terminals, offices and ports led to immediate corrective actions by non-compliant operators, including the payment of wage deficiencies, improved observance of working hours, and strengthening of occupational safety and health (OSH) programs, Bitonio said. The initiative focused on checking compliance with minimum wage, overtime and holiday pay, working hours and rest periods, and social security contributions, ensuring that drivers and transport personnel are protected from exploitation and fatigue-related risks. Inspection teams also checked vehicle roadworthiness, driver fitness, and terminal safety conditions. The inspections were carried out by joint teams from DOLE, Department of Transportation, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, Land Transportation Office, Philippine Coast Guard, and other partners. DOLE also conducted on-site dialogues with drivers and operators, as well as public information campaigns, helping raise awareness on labor rights and safety standards. Bitonio said that when the public sees that the government is carrying out the inspections, trust is further strengthened and violations are better prevented.
