THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) on Sunday said that it is investigating the cause of the Navotas landfill fire. The agency launched an audit and review of the landfill’s operations to identify any regulatory violations. It has also ordered an expedited probe to determine the fire’s origin. “We are not only responding to the smoke; we are also looking at why this happened, what standards may have been violated, and what must be corrected so communities are not put at risk again,” said Environment Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna. The agency emphasized that any finding of noncompliance would lead to legal action. It added that it is focused on stabilizing the site and safeguarding public health through several measures, including fire suppression, air quality monitoring, and community support. The DENR said its teams have intensified operations to suppress remaining fire hotspots and reduce smoke emissions at the landfill. Technical crew from the DENR’s Environmental Management Bureau are conducting soil-covering, cooling, and dredging activities to contain smoldering hotspots and prevent the fire’s further spread.
