Israeli strikes kill 4 in Lebanon, 1 in West Bank

At least four people were killed and three others wounded in Israeli airstrikes on Sunday in southern Lebanon, despite a ceasefire that took effect at midnight between April 16 and 17, reported Xinhua. According to Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA), a motorbike driver was killed in a strike on the town of Haris, and three others died in a strike on a mosque in the town of Sammaaiyeh. Three more were wounded in the town of Safad al-Battikh. Meanwhile, two bodies were recovered on Sunday from the area of Al-Maaliyeh in the Tyre district following an Israeli airstrike a day earlier, the NNA reported. Israeli warplanes also carried out raids across the Nabatieh and Tyre districts, destroying several houses. Separately, Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah on Sunday rejected any move toward direct negotiations with Israel, saying such talks "will not yield results" nor secure a comprehensive ceasefire. He vowed continued operations from Hezbollah against Israeli forces. Earlier on Sunday, the Israeli military issued evacuation warnings to residents of 11 villages and towns in southern Lebanon, including some located beyond the area where its forces are currently deployed. It said its forces killed four Hezbollah militants during weekend strikes, and uncovered "dozens of weapons" belonging to Hezbollah. The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon followed weeks of intensified cross-border fighting linked to a wider regional conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Israel has accused Hezbollah of violating the ceasefire. Israeli officials have previously said the military is expanding a deeper "security zone" inside southern Lebanon that would extend up to the Litani River. Meanwhile, a young Palestinian man was killed and four others were injured by Israeli army fire in the northern West Bank city of Nablus on Sunday, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said. It said in a statement that 26-year-old Naif Samaro was killed after being shot in the head during an Israeli raid. Meanwhile, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society said in a statement that its teams treated 40 people for tear gas inhalation, with 10 cases requiring hospitalization. Local sources and eyewitnesses told Xinhua that Israeli forces stormed Nablus, raiding several shops amid heavy traffic and crowded streets, while firing live ammunition and tear gas. Tensions have been rising across the West Bank since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war on Oct. 7, 2023. According to Palestinian statistics, more than 1,000 Palestinians, including over 235 children, have been killed in the West Bank since then.
