ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif have reaffirmed government’s commitment to safeguarding and promoting press freedom. In his message on World Press Freedom Day being observed on Sunday, the President called upon the citizens to reject falsehood and support credible journalism. President Asif Ali Zardari reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to press freedom, stressing that truth is essential for peace and that a free and responsible media plays a key role in strengthening democracy. He said that journalists across the globe continue to face harassment, pressure, and unsafe working conditions. Zardari expressed concern over the irresponsible use of social media platforms, warning that unchecked misinformation can harm national stability and public trust. He emphasized that Pakistan remains committed to upholding freedom of the press, as guaranteed under Article 19 of the Constitution. In his message, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif assured a conducive environment for media to operate. He said timely dissemination of accurate, impartial, and unbiased information remains the cornerstone of credible journalism. The PM Shebhaz paid tribute to journalists and media professionals worldwide for their services, stating that journalism plays a vital role in building an informed society. He stressed that authentic, unbiased, and verified reporting is the foundation of journalism, while urging media professionals to prevent the spread of propaganda, fake news, and unverified content.
