Firefighters tackle apartment fire on Greys Ave in central Auckland

Firefighters have rushed to a central Auckland building after an apartment caught fire. Fire and Emergency New Zealand said the well-involved blaze caused extensive damage to the ceiling of the first-floor apartment. Crews were alerted to the fire on Grey’s Ave following a fire alarm activation just after 2pm. Six fire engines, two aerial trucks and a command unit were in attendance. A spokesperson said a fire investigator was on the way to determine the cause of the blaze. All people were accounted for, and no injuries have been reported. The spokesperson confirmed that the fire had been extinguished and said crews were currently assessing the internal fire damage. Woon said smoke had gone all the way to the top floor, making the location of the fire difficult. He said it was what they call a rollover fire. The damage to the apartment was extensive, and the ceiling had collapsed. At the scene, groups of firefighters were seen working with hoses, alongside police detectives who arrived. Photos also appear to show firefighters helping an older woman move to safety and a blacked-out window on the ground floor. A business on Greys Ave said they could see three fire trucks parked along the road, but could not see any smoke.
