Drug haul off Oaxaca - Mexico seizes over two tonnes of cocaine floating at sea in naval operation

"Elements of the Secretariat of the Navy, through the Mexican Navy acting as the Coast Guard, seized more than two tonnes of cocaine in the waters of the Gulf of Tehuantepec, off the coast of Oaxaca, authorities reported on Sunday. The seizure consisted of 78 bundles packed in black bags, containing a total of 2,155 packages of cocaine, which were found floating at sea. The operation was carried out 103 nautical miles (190.7 kilometres) from the Tenth Naval Region, based in the Oaxacan city of Salina Cruz, where surface and surveillance units detected the suspicious cargo, leading to its confiscation. This seizure represents an economic impact on criminal organisations estimated at more than 4 million pesos (229,000 USD, 195,000 EUR). It prevents millions of doses of drugs from reaching the streets, according to Mexico's Security Cabinet. The deployment is part of a permanent surveillance strategy by the Secretariat of the Navy that combines maritime intelligence, aerial patrols, and naval presence to close key routes used by criminal groups for the transportation of narcotics to North America. Under the administration of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, authorities have seized more than 65 tonnes of cocaine in maritime events."
