The first round of home visits for Wang Fuk Court residents concluded on Monday as people salvaged what they could from their fire-ravaged homes. Some collected belongings which had a sentimental value to them, including a Wang Tai House resident who retrieved more than 30 of her own paintings. “I didn’t expect [that I could retrieve them] and I am a bit happy. I’ve been painting for over 10 years. I feel at ease seeing they are fine,” she said. A Wang Shing House resident said he retrieved some furniture of his own design over the decades. The man in his 70s said he hoped to return home again to collect more items. “We’ve poured our entire lives into this home. We are not very rich – we saved up to buy the flat when we were young and accumulated belongings along the way, and our child was born here,” he said. “We had planned to live here until the very end, but now it has ended prematurely. This flat, with things inside, was like another child to us.” But another resident said she could hardly retrieve anything, adding it was emotionally difficult to return home. Edited by Tony Sabine
