"UK PM Sir Keir Starmer admitted that 'some alliances' were 'not in the place we want them to be' - in a very British understatement of relations with the United States - as he spoke at the European Political Community in Yerevan on Monday. "We cannot deny that some of the alliances that we have come to rely on are not in the place we would want them to be. There is more tension in the alliances than there should be, and it's very important that we therefore face up to this as a group of countries together at the tactical level," he said. Starmer went on: "We are now facing a war on two fronts. We're going into the fifth year of the Ukraine war, and we've got the Iran conflict at the same time. And both of those are impacting all of us in a very material way in the United Kingdom." Starmer himself is under huge domestic pressure ahead of an expected wipeout in this Thursday's local elections - as well as the ongoing row over his Epstein-linked former US ambassador - and is predicted to face a leadership challenge later this week. Relations between the US and Europe and NATO have hit rock bottom in recent months. On Friday, the US confirmed the pullout of 5,000 troops from Germany following Donald Trump's latest row with Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Merz is a notable 'no-show' at this EPC, claiming he was skipping the latest summit due to 'scheduling' issues. Last week, Merz suggested Trump had been 'humiliated' by Iranian negotiators, while Trump hit back, saying Merz had been 'terrible' on immigration, energy and Ukraine and was now trying to 'interfere' on Iran.
