It's not all one way Keir! - EU says UK must contribute to costs after PM says joining 90 billion loan for Ukraine will create jobs at home

"The European Commission appeared to tell the UK PM it wouldn't be all 'one way' if he wanted to join the Ukraine loan scheme - after Keir Starmer suggested it would be great for British jobs - during the regular press conference in Brussels on Monday. "So the UK Prime Minister announced today that he wants to enter into negotiations to participate in the 90 billion loan for Ukraine. Can you tell us a bit more about these negotiations, what the EU would be looking to secure in terms of contribution, and crucially, how would these negotiations be different from the one for SAFE, which ended in failure?” they were asked. "We have seen a clear political signal from the United Kingdom to join the 90 billion euro assistance package for Ukraine. Now, obviously, it's a first step," Balazs Ujvari replied. "It must provide a significant financial and military support to Ukraine, and the Commission would have to assess this criterion. And... the UK must also commit to providing a fair and proportionate financial contribution to the costs arising from borrowing, and that has to be proportionate to the value of contracts awarded to entities established in the UK," he added. Starmer told media joining would be 'very good' for jobs. He has repeatedly sought closer ties with the EU - after campaigning to stay in the bloc ahead of the 2016 vote to 'Brexit' - and has been accused by the opposition at home of attempting to undermine that democratic vote to exit the European Union. The PM is facing wipeout at the local elections on Thursday, and media outlets in the UK have predicted he could face a leadership challenge on Friday if result are particularly disastrous. He is also under pressure to quit over the scandal surrounding his former US ambassador and their links to late paedophile billionaire Jeffrey Epstein."
