"Russia’s Africa Corps published dramatic action footage on Monday of a team blasting a group of Mali militants with machine guns from a helicopter. The video, shot on Sunday, shows soldiers aiming from the helicopter and firing as it flew over the militant positions. Last week, the Russian Defence Ministry reported that its Africa Corps had foiled a coup attempt in Mali, by armed groups affiliated with Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin and the Azawad Liberation Front. Mali's President Assimi Goita described the armed clashes as part of a 'broader destabilisation plan', designed and carried out by "terrorist armed groups, with internal and external sponsors providing them with intelligence and logistical support." The attacks saw Malian defence minister Sadio Camara killed by a suicide bomb, and another 16 people injured. The country's authorities condemned the acts as 'cowardly terrorist attacks', and promised to bring those responsible to justice, urging citizens to remain vigilant and to rely on official sources of information. Mali has been facing instability caused by the activities of jihadist and separatist groups. Attacks are regularly carried out on both military targets and civilian infrastructure. The exact date and location of the footage released by the Russian Defence Ministry cannot be independently verified."
