4 migrants found dead near Croatian-Slovenian border

Police found four migrants dead and two others in poor health in the Croatian village of Donje Prilisce, near the Croatian-Slovenian border, on Sunday night, Croatian police said on Monday, reported Xinhua. Police said they received a report at 22:30 (2030 GMT) on Sunday about a group of migrants near the city of Karlovac, 70 kms southwest of the capital Zagreb. Two injured migrants were taken to hospital, while 13 others were taken to a nearby asylum center. Preliminary findings suggest that an unidentified smuggler abandoned the migrants near the border after transporting them in a truck, the police said. A criminal investigation is underway to determine all the circumstances of the incident, and an autopsy will also be conducted to establish the exact cause of death and the identities of the deceased, police said. Croatia, a member of the European Union, lies along a key route used by migrants seeking to reach Western Europe. Authorities have reported multiple cases of human smuggling in recent years.
