MANILA, Philippines — A lava flow collapse at Mayon Volcano in Albay generated a pyroclastic density current (PDC) on Tuesday morning, state volcanologists said. A PDC is a rapid, ground-hugging surge of intensely hot gas, ash, and volcanic debris that rushes down a volcano’s slopes during an eruption. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the event occurred between 7:19 a.m. and 7:26 a.m. on May 5, 2026, showing fast-moving hot ash, gas, and volcanic debris descending the southwestern slopes of the volcano.
